jungle, beach, waves, ocean, repeat…

It’s difficult to take a bad video from the shoreline at Caballitos del Mar. Literally everywhere you look, there’s primary forest reaching 100’ in the sky, crashing surf, subtle hues of the tropical ocean, massive rocks with tidepools, and miles of gorgeous beach.

The appearance of the beach changes dramatically with the tides, which have a range of 8-9 feet. At high tide, the ocean laps up against the jungle, leaving barely enough room to walk on the narrow margin between them. As the tide recedes, the beach emerges, in some areas 100 yards (90m) wide and flat enough to hold an impromptu football or soccer match.

Walking to town is easy as the tide falls, from mid-tide through low-tide and back to mid-tide. If your timing is off, you can wander through the palms on shore, or take a short hitch to the highway and walk to the villas.

Ocean flyby

This video was shot between low tide and mid tide. Caballitos del Mar is about 80’ (25m) behind you. The monument rocks on the beach offer an interest contrast to the miles of sand and pebbles that lie to the north. Kids love to climb on the rocks, where they can find tidepools brimming with marine life, and an occasional coconut that’s found a foothold.

Pools? Next to the ocean?

When we built Caballitos del Mar, we were encouraged to add a pool to each of the villas. “What? With the ocean only steps away? Why would anyone need a pool?”

The answer becomes obvious when you stay here: the pools are ideal for kids and swimmers that may be intimidated by the ocean surf; they allow you to swim a short stroll away from the kitchen and refrigerator; and they are really nice for a late night dip before retiring.

Most meals are served on the terrace that surrounds the pools. On occasion, “Jesus” lizards will run across the pool’s surface, either because they are being pursued by larger lizards, or simply trying to get to the other side. They are great entertainment.

Where the jungle meets the sea

Caballitos del Mar is located as close to the beach as possible in Costa Rica, so it’s convenient, but doesn’t intrude on turtle nesting areas. This video shows you the tall, gorgeous jungle trees that surround the villas, some towering over 80’ (25m) above the ground. However, they also give cover to the villas so beachgoers aren’t imposed upon. Nor are the turtles…
